I don't think it was exactly realistic to hold off Maldonado for another lap and a half. Hamilton's tyres were shot and only getting worse, so it was only a matter of time before it would've happened. That said, Maldonado was a bit foolish to think he was getting through there.
IMO the worst is when you gather plenty of supplies (I usually get 3-4 full canteens and a lot of food) and set out to finally gather some good weapons and military goods, just to be lit up by some camper and have to start all over again.
This really sums up my thoughts too.

True, there are at least some open roads. I suspect the excessive guardrails are there to just ping nooby players back onto the track then.

I know it's something silly to fret over, but it's appears that this is the NFS style open world (where there's lots of roads to choose but they're all bound by guard grails, berms, etc) as opposed to the TDU style open world (where it's actually open), and that really bothers me. It's very nitpicky of me, but that enclosure effect irks me enough to kill the realism.
